Tea Tree OilOne of the most popular herbs used for treating various ailments and afflictions is tea tree. Although some of us are not aware of the wonderful properties of tea tree, historical accounts showed that this herb has numerous medical uses—from healing burns and cuts to treating hair loss and thinning hair.

Tea tree is a narrow-leaved plant known as melaleuca alternifolia. The tea tree oil, a yellowish liquid which is extracted from the leaves of the plant through steam distillation, has antifungal, antiseptic and antiviral qualities; making the tea tree herb an invaluable part of any natural herbal remedies.

The tea tree oil is a source of various elements that help treat hair-related conditions like dry and flaky scalp; split-ends and dandruff; and hair fall and hair thinning problems.

In addition, tea tree oil helps in controlling the overproduction of sebum in the scalp, promoting a healthy environment for the proper development of the hair follicles. It also acts as a natural moisturizer to help prevent hair and scalp dryness.

  • To prevent the hair from becoming too dry, brittle and damaged, use this do-it-yourself (DIY) hair care recipe made from tea tree oil and other essential oils.

What to prepare:

-        lavender essential oil (2 drops);

-        rosemary essential oil (3 drops);

-        coconut oil (6 tablespoons); and

-        tea tree oil (2 drops).

What to do:

Add all the essential oils into an empty bottle. Make sure to shake the mixture thoroughly. Afterward, spray the amalgam into the scalp and the hair follicles.  Next, gently massage the scalp using the palm of your hand. Then, cover your head with a soft clean towel and let it sit for a period of 30 minutes. Finally, wash your hair strands using a mild organic shampoo.

  • To control the onset of dandruff and scalp build-up, apply this easy-to-do hair care recipe made from tea tree oil.

What to Prepare:

-        distilled water (1 cup); and

-        tea tree oil (1 tablespoon).

What to do:

Add the 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil into the 1 cup of water. Then, shake thoroughly to combine the mixture. Next, wash your hair with lukewarm water. Afterward, gradually spray the mixture onto the hair strands and gently massage your scalp. Leave the mixture on until the hair is completely dry.

Caution

Undiluted tea tree oil may cause allergic reactions like itchiness, irritation and redness on sensitive skin. Hence, if you have sensitive skin, make sure to dilute the oil with carrier oils like olive, sweet almond, jojoba and sunflower to balance its concentration.
